Bull DPS6000 moved to remote storage
As we need more space for new vector machines, which will arrive soon, we
decided to move our
Bull DPS6000
to remote storage, as this machine's
home is the commercial data processing, whereas we have our focus on machines
in the section of technical-scientific computing.
Specifications:
- Vendor: Bull
- System Type: DPS6000
- Number of processors: 3
- Year: 1990
- Memory: 32 MB
- Storage: Two SMD Dual-Disk spindles (about 330MB each), one SCSI RAID-5 Array
(5 GB), 5 1/4" Floppy drive
- External connectors: 180 V24 serial lines
- Power requirements: 240 Volts, single phase, officially rated at 24
Amps (main cabinet)
The main cabinet (size: 197x80x76cm (WxDxH)):
This is an overarm
picture of the Bull DPS6000. As you can see, the machine is split up into two
cabinets. The
main cabinet
and the
expansion
cabinet. The main cabinet holds
the V24-Interface-Cards, the expansion cabinet holds the CPUs and the
memory boards.
The memory board on the picture has 2 sandwich boards on it (max. 4), each
sandwich board holds 8MB, as we have two cards with each 2 boards on it, this
makes a total of 32 MB RAM.
The 180 serial lines are very impressive, see
this photo or
this photo.
The dual-disk spindles (size: 54x94x92cm (WxDxH) each):
This machine comes with 2 14" dual-disk-spindle drives, which means that
one rack can hold 2 disk spindles (as we have 2 racks this makes a total of
4). Each disk spindle holds approximately 330 MB.
The disk spindles are connected via a SMD interface to the Bull.
This is a
side view of the disk spindles and
This is the
top view onto the disk spindles.
There are 3 or 4 disk packs available.
The RAID-Array (size: 38x75x50cm (WxDxH)):
As the disk spindles became to small, the site where the machine was operated
put up an additional RAID-Array with 4 8"-SCSI Disks in it.
According to a sticker, this SCSI-Array is configured as a 5GB RAID-5-Array.
This is a

Please note that we have the panels in the Bull-Design which can be attached
to the SCSI-Array in order to have the Bull-look.
Documentation:
One shelf of documentation for the DPS6000 is included.
This is a picture
of the whole shelf, here are detailed views of the documentation (
Left Part,
Middle Part,
Right Part).
Software:
We have floppies with the Hardware-Testsoftware on them.
Additionally, we have some other floppies with the operating system on it.
One disk pack also holds a pre-installed operating system.
Terminals:
We have 2 or 3 terminals of the type
Bull Questar 210,
one of them has a special firmware which makes it possible to use it
as a console terminal for the Bull.
Then there is another Bull Questar Terminal, which doesn't have a modelnumber on
the front of it.
